Cycling – environmentally friendly and healthy
Cycling has been experiencing a boom for years
Particularly in times of pandemic, the bicycle was and is the ideal means of transport for many. As time spent on the saddle not only keeps us fit but also allows us to keep our distance, it should come as no surprise that cycling has been experiencing a boom for years. In spite of this, only an average of eleven percent of all journeys in Germany are currently made by bike – a situation that is set to change in the future, with the government, states and local authorities now working much harder to make cycling more attractive and safer. With this goal in mind, the 7th National Cycling Congress – an event originally launched back in 2009 – was held on April 27 and 28, 2021.
On April 27, the 2021 German Bicycle Award was presented digitally in Hamburg. The event was moderated on this occasion by Valeska Homburg and Arndt Breitfeld. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and the Association for Pedestrian and Bicycle-friendly Cities, Local Communities and Districts in North Rhine Westphalia (AGFS) award the German Bicycle Price annually for the most innovative projects aimed at promoting cycling.

First place for the Kidical Mass in Cologne
The Kidical Mass Cologne was awarded first place in the “Communication” category for “Action weekend 2020: Space for the next generation!” More than 22,000 cyclists of all ages demonstrated in Cologne for bicycle- and child-friendly cities across Germany. The vision by which Kidical Mass operates is for children and young people to be able to move around safely and independently by bike. Presenter Claus Ruhe Madsen, Mayor of the university and Hanseatic city of Rostock and chairman of the Association for Bicycle- and Pedestrian-friendly Municipalities of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, emphasized that children must be involved in mobility decisions as early as possible. Actions like these create positive experiences, are fun and make children visible!
